In 1930 the family resided in Visalia, California. Beginning in 1931, Gene worked as a clerk for 45 years, first for Purity grocery stores and later for Vallerga's grocery stores.
Gene spent his last year in a rest home with Alzheimers and a stroke that paralyzed his right side. He passed away at age 84 and 8 months.
