Notes:  James probably already owned land adjacent to his father's land in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, when his father died in 1828 — and therefore may not have inherited any of his father's land.  James' land is noted in a 1851 map of West Deer Township and a 1862 map of the newly named Richland Township (Source 191).

In the 1850 USA census, James, 40, was living with his wife Mary, 37, in West Deer Township, Allegheny County.  James was a farmer and his real estate was worth $3,000.  Their children were Mary, 12, Elizabeth, 11, and Matthew 7.  Also in the household was Joseph Fox, 30, a salesman.

However, James and his family could not be found in the U.S. 1860 census — and not in West Deer Township after a thorough search.
