Notes:  Mary most likely spent her formative years in Gallatin County, Kentucky, which, at that time, was a sparsely populated rural farming area.  The family moved to Kenton County by 1850, and Mary lived with her parents until she married.

Mary was 23 years old when she married Elisha who was a 39 years old widower.  (His first wife was Mary Catherine's aunt, Mary Messic Franklin.)  Mary Catherine and Elisha married six months after Mary Messic's death.  Their Feb 1867 wedding probably occurred in Kenton County, but they moved to Trimble County, Kentucky, by 1870 — where they remained for the rest of their married life.

From the beginning of her married life, Mary Catherine had her hands full with the seven children she inherited from Mary Messic:  six boys ranging in age from 7 to 15, and a girl age 5.

Mary Catherine gave birth to her first child in Dec 1867.  She would bear a total of nine children of her own before her family was completed.

By 1908 her son Elisha Henry Bird had married and moved to Indianapolis, Indiana.  Mary Catherine, by then having no minor children, moved in with Elisha Henry and his family.  Although Kentuckians, many of the Birds migrated to Indianapolis.  There, Mary spent her later years, mostly with her children and moving about them from time to time.

Mary Catherine was deeply religious and very active for her age.  She was very much loved by those who knew her, was held in the highest esteem in her church, and was the oldest member of her church.  She suffered from asthma for several years prior to her death.  The asthma and a stroke of apoplexy hastened her passing.  Three of her children predeceased her.
