Notes:  According to family sources, Willie Ray Caldwell was born 6 Jul 1866 in Thorntown, Boone, Indiana.  His parents were Robert Caldwell and Maranda Jane Blacker.  When Willie registered for the World War I draft in Dec 1917, he was a farm laborer working for Elmer Stookey in Lebanon, Indiana.  He was described as being of medium height with blue eyes, brown hair and slightly bald.  He enlisted in the U.S. Army on 25 May 1918 in Lebanon, Indiana.  He served in Co. A, 126th Infantry, 32nd Division and was discharged 23 May 1919.

According to family sources, Hazel Virginia Roe was born 2 Apr 1905 in Norcatur, Decatur, Kansas.  Her parents were William Bascom Roe and Mary May Henkel.  Hazel Roe, 19, married Ray Caldwell, 35, on 30 Sep 1921 in Iron County, Utah.  They had a family of three children.

In the 1930 U.S. census, Ray W. Caldwell, 43, was living with his wife Hazel V. Caldwell, 24, in Modena, Iron, Utah.  They were renting their residence for $5. per month, and did not have a radio set.  Ray was a laborer on a railroad section gang, and was listed as a veteran of the World War.  Their children were Beryl B., 7, born in Utah and attending school; and Gilbert R., 5, born in Nevada.

On 16 Jun 1931, Willie Ray Caldwell was admitted to the Danville branch of the U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Danville, Indiana.  Cause of admittance was gastritis.  He was discharged 1 Jul 1931.

In the 1940 U.S. census, Willie Ray Caldwell, 53, and his wife Hazel Virginia Caldwell, 35, were living in Modena, Iron, Utah.  They owned their residence valued at $600.  Willie was a section hand for the Union Pacific Railroad and had completed 8th grade.  Virginia had completed one year of high school.  Their children at home were Gilbert Roe, 15, who had completed one year of high school; and Robert Clair, 4, born in Utah.

In the Apr 1942 World War II Draft Registration (the "old man's registration"), Willie Ray Caldwell, 55, was living in Modena, Utah with his wife Hazel, and working for the U.P.RR Co.  He signed his name W. Ray Caldwell.

On 20 Mar 1945, their son S/Sgt. Gilbert R. Caldwell, 20, went missing in action over Yugoslavia.  He was a waist gunner and radio operator on a bomber, on his 47th mission.  He was liberated from a prisoner of war camp in Jun 1945.

Willie Ray Caldwell worked for the Union Pacific Railroad in Utah for 20 years, retiring in 1946 with a heart ailment.  He and Hazel moved to San Bernardino, California about 1952, living at 823 Campus Way.

W. Ray Caldwell, 71, died 2 Apr 1958 at the Veterans' Hospital, Long Beach, Los Angeles, California.  Services were conducted 4 Apr 1958 at the Veterans Administration Chapel, West Los Angeles, and he was buried in the Los Angeles National Cemetery, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California.

Hazel V. Caldwell worked as an inventory clerk for Norton Air Force Base for 21 years.  She died 1 Feb 1993 at the age of 87 of heart failure at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Fontana, San Bernardino, California.  Services were held 3 Feb 1993 at the Montecito Memorial Chapel in Loma Linda.  Burial services were held 4 Feb 1993 at Montecito Memorial Park, Loma Linda, California.
