Notes: George Pettit was born about 1847 in Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey. His parents were Thomas Pettit and Leah Brown. He had a younger sister Mary Francis as identified with the same parents in her birth record. George married Sarah E. Corey in Manhattan, New York on 20 Oct 1868. No census record has been found for the couple in 1870. They had a daughter, Frances Lydia Pettit, born 5 Oct 1875 in Newark, New Jersey. Their daughter was raised by William and Mary Nichols, and later the Bowens.

Two city directory entries are found for a George H. Pettit. In 1872, he was living at 78 Ferry, Newark, New Jersey, as a boatman. In 1884, he was living at 45 Jewett Ave, Jersey City, New Jersey, listed as a deckhand. No death record has been found for George Pettit.
