Thomas Pettit married Leah Brown on 7 Nov 1846 in Essex County, New Jersey.  They are not found in the 1850 U.S. census.  In the 1860 U.S. census, Thomas Pettit (transcribed as Bennet), 36, and his wife Leah, 34, were living in Newark Ward 5, Essex, New Jersey.  Thomas was the captain of a schooner and his personal estate was $200.  Their children were Stephen, 12, George, 10, and Mary, 6.

Thomas Pettit is listed in the Newark, New Jersey City Directory, 1861 as living at 23 Plume, Newark.  Thomas Pettit, 40, is listed in the Civil War Draft Registration Records on 1 Jul 1863, living in the 5th Congressional District, Newark, New Jersey.  There is no record that he actually served.

In the 1870 U.S. census, Thomas Pettit, 46, and his wife Leah, 45, were living in Newark Ward 5, Essex, New Jersey.  Thomas was a boatman.  His parents were both of foreign birth.  Their children were Stephen, 23, George, 20, Mary, 16, and Elizabeth, 5.  Thomas and his two sons were all boatmen.  Also in the household was Kesiah Brown, 74, probably Leah's mother.

Thomas is not found in any further census records.  He died 30 Mar 1896 in Newark, Essex, New Jersey, and was buried 2 Apr 1896 in the Woodland Cemetery, Essex, New Jersey.
