in the Jefferson District of Alexandria, Virginia. She was the first child of John Thomas
Ballenger, 19, and Julia L. Buckley, 17. In the 1920 U.S. census, Louise, age 4, was living with her family on Belfont Ave. in the Jefferson District of Alexandria, Virginia. Her father John was a brakeman for the railroad. She had a younger sister, Elizabeth, 2 months. Their residence was shared with two lodgers, Vernon and Blanche Parsons. Vernon worked for the railroad. In the 1930 U.S. census, Louise, age 15, was living with her family at 900 North Washington St., in the 3rd Ward of Alexandria, Alexandria (Independent City), Virginia. They were renting their home for $15.00 a month, and did not have a radio set. Her father John was a conductor for the steam railroad. The children were Louise, 15, Elizabeth 10, and John Jr., 7. Elizabeth and John attended school. Also in the household was a boarder, James Stewartson, a millwright for a fertilizer plant. Ella L. Ballenger married Harvey D. Allison on 26 Nov 1930 in Annapolis, Maryland. This is according to the Alexandria, Virginia divorce records. From the Alexandria, Virginia, City Directory it is clear that they grew up in the same neighborhood. Ella L. Allison, 19, resident of Alexandria, Virginia, filed for divorce from Harvey D. Allison, resident of 1 No. Wash. St. Alex, VA, on grounds of desertion. The divorce was final 11 Sep 1934. There were no children. Ella Louise Allison, 21, married Wade H. Thomas, 24, on 18 Jul 1936 at Do. Highlands, Arlington, Virginia. The Arlington, Virginia, City Directory, 1934 lists Wade H. Thomas and his wife Louise living at 602 Walbrook Ave,, Va Highland., before their marriage date. The Alexandria, Virginia, City Directory, 1938 lists the couple living at 1001 18th S., Arlington, Virginia. In the 1940 U.S. census, Ella L. Thomas, 25, and her busband Wade H. Thomas, 28, were living in the Gelmont Apts.,Washington, District of Columbia. Ella was a telephone operator. Wade was an accounting clerk for the Department of Agriculture. Both had completed two years of high school. Ella and Wade had one daughter, Carole Louise Thomas, born 6 Apr 1942. The couple separated in December 1942. A final decree of divorce was granted 17 Jan 1947 in favor of Wade on the grounds of desertion. Ella Louise Thomas (nee Ballenger), 25, married Harold Alexander Miller, 23, on 6 Jun 1947 in the District of Columbia. In 1959 they were residing at 47 Lewis, Perth Amboy, Middlesex, New Jersey.
