| Notes: Vesta Mary Durst was born 12 Jul 1898 in near Delphos, Ottawa, Kansas. Her
parents were Rolly LeRoy Durst and Louisa May Copping. She had an older sister,
Ethel, born in Feb 1897. In the 1900 U.S. census, the family was living on
their farm in Sheridan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas. This was still the family home
when her parents celebrated their fifthieth wedding anniversary in 1946.
Her father Rolly was a farmer and owned the farm free of mortgage. Vesta's sister Violet was born in 1901, but died in infancy. Her sister Dora was born in 1902, and her sister Lillian in 1908. The family is enumerated together in the 1910 U.S. census and the 1915 Kansas State census. In the 1920 U.S. census, Vesta, age 22, was teaching in a rural school, and boarding with the James C. Hollis family in Stanton Twp., Ottawa, Kansas. The family included James and his wife Anna, as well as three children, Faye, Theodore and Peter. James was a farmer, and his daughter Faye was a rural school teacher. According to family records, Vesta married Rupert Harold Smith on 5 Oct 1920 in Delphos, Ottawa, Kansas. In the 1925 Kansas State census, Vesta and Rubert were living in Sheridan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas. Rupert was a grain farmer, renting the land and farming on his own account. Their son Ivan had been born in 1922. Their daughter Lois was born in 1926. The family continued to farm in Sheridan Twp., Ottawa. In the 1940 U.S. census, Vesta is reported as having completed four years of high school. In 1952, Vesta and Rupert moved into Delphos. Rupert became sexton of the Delphos Cemetery. In Sep 1970, their children helped them celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a open house at the Delphos United Methodist Church. Vesta died 3 Sep 1979 in Delphos, and is buried in the Delphos Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
