In the 1930 U.S. census, the Zabriskie family was living in Monroe, Sevier, Utah.  Her father John was a traveling salesman ["salesman, commercial traveler].  The family was renting their home for $12.  The children were Grant, 18, Dona, 17, Merrell, 15, and Shirley, 6, all attending school; and J. Roland, 9 months.  They had a boarder, Max Evans, 18, a farm hand.

In the 1935 Provo, Utah, City Directory, the Zabriskie family is listed living in Spanish Fork.  Her father John was in insurance.  The 1940 U.S. census also gives their 1935 residence as Spanish Fork, Utah, Utah.

The Provo, Utah, City Directories list Shirley's family at various Provo, Utah addresses through the years.  These included 266 S 9th West (1939), 185 S 4th East (1941), and 276 S 4th West (1944).  Her father John worked as a salesman (1939 - 1941) and as a clerk for Union Pacific (1944).  Her mother Violet worked as an attendant at the Utah State Hospital, Provo, from 1939 until her retirement.

Shirley married Vernon LeRoy Peterson on 8 Mar 1945 in Provo, Utah, Utah.  Shirley worked to put Vernon through college, where he earned a business degree from Brigham Young University.  For twelve years, from 1951 to 1963, they made their home in Idaho Falls, Bonneville, Idaho, where Vernon worked for the Atomic Energy Commission and for its subcontractors.  They are listed in the Idaho Falls, Idaho, City Directory living at 841 Crestmont Avenue, Idaho Falls, from 1954 through 1957.  In 1960 they are listed at 442 K, Idaho Falls.

They had a family of one son and four daughters.  The birthplaces of their children are unknown.  Following Idaho Falls, they lived in various places, finally settling in San Mateo, California.

Shirley was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis around 1972, which progressively incapacitated her. Her husband Vernon died 23 July 1984 in a San Francisco, California, hospital following a short illness.  He was buried 3 Aug 1984 in the Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, California.

At some point in time, Shirley returned to Idaho Falls, Idaho.  Before her death she lived at the Idaho Falls Good Samaritan Center.  She died 21 May 2001 in Idaho Falls, Bonneville, Idaho.  Her burial place is unknown.
