Boarding Date:  12 Sep 1944, aboard the LCIL-809       LCIL-809, a 387-ton landing craft, infantry, was built at Barber, New Jersey.  Commissioned in September 1944, she underwent amphibious training and shakedown in the Chesapeake Bay area during that month and the next.  Sent to the Pacific to join the war against Japan, LCIL-809 arrived at San Diego, California, in November and underwent more training.  In December 1944 she was converted to a fire support vessel, receiving the new designation LCI(G)-809 at year's end.
      During the first several weeks of 1945 LCI(G)-809 transited the Pacific Ocean, by way of Pearl Harbor, arriving at Purvis Bay, Solomon Islands, in mid-February.  She then began preparations for the Okinawa Invasion, during which she provided bombardment support, as well as patrol and escort services, from the beginning of April until the campaign's conclusion in June.  At the end of April, while engaged in these duties, she was further redesignated LCI(M)-809.
      After Japan surrendered in early September 1945, LCI(M)-809 took part in occupation work.  She returned to the United States in late 1945 or early 1946.

Boarding Date:  11 Dec 1945, aboard the Medea (AKA-31)      Medea (AKA-31), an Artemis-class attack cargo ship in service with the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946.After the cessation of hostilities on 15 August, she carried occupation troops from the Philippines to Japan until November, when she reported for duty with the "Magic Carpet" fleet.  This was the name for the operation to return almost 700,000 troops back to the United States from the Asian theater.  She arrive in San Francisco Bay, California in early 1946.
