Notes: Walter Edward Samsel was born 20 Oct 1939 in New Britain, Hartford, Connecticut. He was the second son of Walter Samsel and Joanne Ciuchta. In the 1940 U.S. census, Walter E., 1, was living with his parents, Walter Samsel, 30, and Johenna, 24, at 80 Collins Street, New Britain, Hartford, Connecticut. His father was a welder for a hardware factory, had earned $900. They were renting their home for $9.00, and both had completed 8th grade. His older brother, Robert W., was 6 years. In the 1950 U.S. census, Walter A. Samsel, 10, and his brother Robert M., 12, were listed as stepsons, living with the Alfred Dahlen family at 12032 La Maders, El Monte, Los Angeles, California. . Alfred Dahlen, 41, and Johann Dahlen had their own son, Jane [sic], 5. Alfred was a truck mechanic.

When Walter left his step-family, he began using the name Alan Dahlen. On 23 Jun 1955, Al Dahlen, at the age of 16, married Luella H. Hoefler in Maricopa County, Arizona. At the age of 17 he got a speeding ticket, and was fined $10. His address was 2232½ W. Windsor St., Phoenix, Arizona. Alan and Luella may have had three children.

Alan served in the U.S. Army from Jun 1963 to Jul 1965, which included service in Vietnam. In 1966, Alan Dahlen was living at 805 Minnie St., Apt. 6, Santa Ana, Orange, California. He was registered to vote as a Democrat.
