In the 1870 U.S. census, Leah Pettit, 45, and her husband Thomas Pettit, 46, were living in Newark Ward 5, Essex, New Jersey. Thomas was a boatman. Their children were Stephen, 23, George, 20, Mary, 16, and Elizabeth, 5. Thomas and their two sons were all boatmen. Also in the household was Kesiah Brown, 74, born in New Jersey, although both of Leah's parents were marked as being of foreign birth
