Notes:  William was a mystery man who may have lived three lives as follows:
  1. During his first 34 years, from 1882 to about 1916, William grew up and received his education in Denver, Colorado, married a widow (Myna Ann Short), and fathered three children with her while they lived in Nevada and Washington state.
  2. Beginning sometime about 1916 William abandoned his wife and children, totally disappeared, and had no contact with them for the remainder of their lives.  His family therefore had a very negative opinion of him during the nine decades after his 1916 departure.
  3. However, unknown to his prior family, William became a successful real estate operator in Burlingame, California, beginning in 1922 and continuing until his death in 1949.  In addition, William married a divorcee, Gertie Hancock, and remained married to her until his death.

Caution 1:  The William who married Myna may not be the same person as our William in Burlingame.  I have assumed that they are one and the same person; however, absolute proof has yet to be found.
Caution 2:  A World War I Draft Registration Card exists for a William Simon Nielson who was born on 23 Nov 1882 and lived in San Francisco with his wife Ruth on 12 Sep 1918.  Although the birth date is identical, I have assumed that that William is not our William.

Our William moved to Burlingame in 1922 and purchased a home on Broadway at that time.  After that he spent most of his life in the contracting and real estate businesses.  He owned Easton Realty Company, which was a prominent name in real estate on Broadway.  He became widely known as a successful real estate operator, handling most of the important real estate transfers in the business section of Broadway.

William was a member of the California Real Estate Association, and in 1943 was the president of the San Mateo-Burlingame Real Estate Board.  He was a director of the Burlingame Chamber of Commerce.
