In 1919 Gertrude at the age of 19 entered the U.S. from Canada at Port Huron while on a trip to St. Paul, Minnesota.  Her husband paid for the trip.  Her permanent residence at that time was Forest, Ontario.  She was described as being 5' 4" tall and having a fair complexion, brown hair, and green eyes.

In 1932 Gertrude declared her intent to become a U.S. citizen.  At that time she was a housewife residing in Alhambra, California.  She described herself as being 5' 1" tall with brown eyes, light complexion, brown hair, weight 170 pounds, and having a mole on her chin.
