Notes:  William's father was a hotel keeper in Bayfield at the time of William's birth.  William's birth registration was filed by his sister, Mary Jane Purdy, on 24 Mar 1936.  On that date her name was Mary Jane Parsell and she lived in Almer Township, Tuscola County, Michigan.

William sometimes preferred to go by the name Alfred rather than William — such as in 1901 when he was 28 and a single farmer living in Bosanquet, Lambton County, Ontario.  He was a railroad engineer living in London at the time of his marriage in 1907 at the age of 34.
