Notes:  In 1861 on the day the English census was taken, Joseph, at age 39, was the schoolmaster of a School House that had 10 student boarders ranging in age from 6 to 15 years.  In addition, the residence included Joseph's age 37 wife, an age 11 servant girl, and two female visitors — for a total of 15 persons.  The visitors were his nieces:  Lybella Jackman age 14 and Julia Sophia Palmer age 13.  Two of the 10 pupils were his nephews:  John Lane Palmer age 12 and Lewis Edward Palmer age 9.  Thus Joseph was an uncle to the four.

In 1881 Joseph at age 59 was a manager of the Royal Agricultural And Commercial insurance company.

By 1891 Joseph had retired.
