Notes: In the 1880 U.S. census, "Fannie" Nichols, 4, was living with William S. Nichols, 37,
and his wife Mary, 32, at 379 Halsey Street, Newark, Essex, New Jersey. Frances Lydia Pettit
had been "unofficially adopted" by the Nichols after her father, George Pettit, was unable to take care of her.
The census listed her as "Fannie Nichols, daughter". William was a photographer. According to the census
records, the family was sharing a residence with Fannie Meeker, a widowed seamstress and her widowed mother,
Hannah Meeker
When Frances was about 12 years, Mary Nichols died, and William, unable to care for her, sent her to live with
the Bowdens in Cedar Grove, Essex, New Jersey.
