| Notes: Frances Lydia Pettit was born 5 Oct 1875 in Newark, Essex, New Jersey. 
Her parents were George Pettit and Sarah E. Corey. Her mother died at
her birth, or shortly thereafter, and her father, unable to care for her,
gave her to William and Mary Nichols to be raised. In the 1880 U.S. census, "Fannie" Nichols, 4, was living with William S. Nichols, 37, and his wife Mary, 32, at 379 Halsey Street, Newark, Essex, New Jersey. William was a photographer. When Frances was about 12 years, Mary Nichols died, and William, unable to care for her, sent her to live with the Bowdens in Cedar Grove, Essex, New Jersey. Frances married Leslie George Baldwin in 1894 in Cedar Grove. Wilfred, their first child was born 21 Dec 1895, and Evelyn was born 8 Dec 1896. When Evelyn was born, the family was living on Pompton Turnpike in Cedar Grove. In the 1900 U.S. census, Frances, 24, and her husband Leslie Baldwin, 24, were living at 164 Wright Street, Newark, New Jersey. Leslie was a clerk for a broker. Their son Wilfred was living with his grandparents, Daniel and Evelena Baldwin in the Verona Twp., Essex, New Jersey. Their daughter Evelyn was 3 years. In the 1905 New Jersey State census, Fannie, 30, and her husband Leslie G. Baldwin, 30, were enumerated in the Verona Twp., Essex, New Jersey. | In the 1910 U.S. census, Frances, 34, and her husband Leslie G. Baldwin, 34, were living in Rahway, Ward 3,
Union, New Jersey. Leslie was a real estate agent and they were renting their home.
Their daughter Evelyn was 13, and their son Wilfred still lived with his grandparents, Daniel and
Evelena Baldwin, now in Caldwell, Essex, New Jersey. The family moved again, and in the 1915 New Jersey State census, Francis, 40, and her husband Leslie Baldwin, 40, were living in a rented home at 228a Rector Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex, New Jersey. Their son Wilfred, 20, was a chemist assistant, and daughter Evelyn, 19, was a grocery cashier. Also in the family was her mother-in-law, Evelyn Baldwin, 72. Sometime before 1920, Frances and her husband had separated and they lived apart therafter. In the 1920 U.S. census, Fannie Baldwin, 44, was a roomer in the home of Charles Gregg, 39, a salesman, his wife Mary, 31, and daughter, Bernice, 2½, in Perth Amboy, Ward 2, Middlesex, New Jersey. Fannie was a telephone operator. Her husband Leslie and son Wilfred were in living in Brooklyn, New York. Her daughter Evelyn had married in 1918. In the 1930 U.S. census, Frances Baldwin, 54, was living in a rented home at 301 East 5th Street, Plainfield, Union County, New Jersey. Her son Wilfred, 34, a traveling salesman for the traffic bureau, was living with her. Wilfred married in 1935, and in 1937, Frances and Wilfred, and his wife Alice, were living at 568 Hamilton, Rahway, New Jersey. They were divorced in 1938. In the 1940 U.S. census, Frances E. Baldwin, 64, was living with her son, Wilfred L., 44, in a rented home at 599 W. Sixth Ave., Rahway, Union, New Jersey. Frances had completed 8th grade. Wilfred had completed 3 years of high school and was a fire extinguisher dealer. In 1942, when Frances made an affidavit regarding the birthdate of her daughter Evelyn, she was living at 458 West Milton Avenue, Rahway, New Jersey. In the 1950 U.S. census, Frances L. Baldwin, 74, was living with her son Wilfred, 54, at 854 MT. Avenue, Westfield, Union, New Jersey. The census reports that she was divorced. Wilfred, also divorced, was the proprietor of a fire extinguisher dealership. About 1957, Frances moved to Alhambra, Los Angees, California, to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn and Peter Miller. She became a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Alhambra. About 1960, when the Millers moved to Hesperia, San Bernardino, California, she moved with them. Frances Lydia Baldwin died 23 Feb 1965 in Victorville, San Bernardino, California. She was buried 25 Feb 1965 in Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, California. Her headstone can be found in the Valley View section, Lot 1160, Grave 4, next to her granddaughter and husband, Frances M. and Donald K. Olson.
