Notes: Wilfred Leslie Baldwin was born 21 Dec 1895 in Cedar Grove, Verona Twp., Essex,
New Jersey, the son of Leslie George Baldwin and Frances Lydia Pettit. He had a younger
sister, Evelyn Mae. He grew up with his grandparents,
Daniel and Evelena Baldwin.In the 1900 U.S. census, Wilford L. Baldwin, 4, was living in Verona, Essex, with his grandparents, Daniel Baldwin, 52, and Evaline, 57. His grandfather was a home painter, and their own home was mortgaged. Wilfred is seen at left in 1904. In the 1905 New Jersey census, Wilford L. Baldwin, 10, was attending school, and living with his grandparents Daniel W. Baldwin, 59, and Evelina, 61, on Central Ave., Caldwell Borough, Essex, New Jersey. In the 1910 U.S. census, Wilfred Baldwin, 14, was living with his grandparents, Daniel W. Baldwin, 63,
and Evelena, 67, on Smith Avenue, Caldwell, Essex. Daniel was a house carpenter. Their
house was rented. Emil Oihlu, 44, a baker was a lodger.
On 5 Jun 1917 when Wilfred registered for the WWI draft, he was living with his parents at 228a Rector Street,
Perth Amboy, Middlesex, New Jersey. He was the chief clerk for a steel company in Rahway which was making
steel for the government. He was described as being of medium height and build, with brown eyes and
red hair.During World War I, Wilfred served as Quartermaster Clerk on two different Army transports. He sailed between Neport News, Virginia, and France, crossing the Atlantic five times. The photograph of Wilfred at left is inscribed La Lafont, 75.Rue Ste.Catherine, Bordeaux. In the 1920 U.S. census, Wilfred L. Baldwin, 23, was a lodger, living at 123 St. Marks Avenue, Brooklyn, New York. His father, Leslie G. Baldwin, 44, was also a lodger in the boarding house. They both were listed as being salesmen for a brokerage. There were five other male lodgers. In 1922, Wilfred was a non-resident member of the First Presbyterian Church of Perth Amboy, living at the St. Marks Avenue address. On 31 Jan 1922, Wilfred L. Baldwin married Florence L. Stevenson in the Bethany Lutheran Church, Erie, Erie, Pennsylvania. She may have been known as Elsie. It is not known when or how the marriage ended. In the 1930 U.S. census, Wilfred Baldwin, 34, was living with his mother Frances, 54, at 301 East 5th Street, Plainfield, Union, New Jersey. His mother was listed as head of household. They were renting the residence. Wilfred was a traveling salesman in the traffic bureau industry. On 2 Mar 1935, Wilfred Baldwin married Mamie Alice Everly in New Jersey. An August 1935 newspaper article mentions that he was theRahway City Clerk. In 1937 - 1938, Wilfred and Alice were living at 568 Hamilton, Rahway, New Jersey. His mother Frances was living with them. They divorced in 1938. In the 1940 U.S. census, Wilfred Baldwin, 44, head of house, and his mother Lydia Baldwin, 64, were living at 599 W. Sixth Street, Rahway, Union, New Jersey. He was a dealer of fire extinguishers, working on his own account, and had completed 3 years of high school. Lydia had completed 8 years of school. The 1940 Polk's Rahway City Directory give both his and mother's address as 5990 W. Scott Ave., Rahway, the same as the Acme-Baldwin Fire Prevention Company. On 26 Apr 1942, Wilfred Leslie Baldwin registered for the World War II draft. He owned the Acme Baldwin Fire Protection Company. He was described as 5'8", weighing 145 pounds. This was being run from the home he shared as early as the 1940 U.S. census with his mother, Frances. In later years the company was located in Westfield. In the 1950 U.S. census, Wilfred L. Baldwin, 54, and his mother, Frances L. Baldwin, 74, were living at 854 MT. Ave., Westfield, Union, New Jersey. Wilfred was the proprietor of his Service and sales fire extinguisher business. He was listed as divorced, but on 30 Sep 1950, he remarried Alice Everly. In 1961, Wilfred and Alice retired to Prescott, Yavapai, Arizona. At various times during his life, he was a member of the Rifle Club, the Mineral Club, and the YMCA.
Wilfred passed away at the age of 96 on 21 Mar 1991, in Prescott, Yuvapai, Arizona. A Memorial Service
was held 2 Apr 1991 in the Prescott Presbyterian Church in America, of which he was a member.
