The California Birth Index listed her name as Ruth Adele, but she
always went by the name Adele. Adele's parents were Rudolph
Schwartz and Nedye Ethel Loewy, both born in New York. Rudloph's
parents were born in Germany and Nedye's parents were born in Austria. In the 1920 U.S. census, Adele, 1, was living with her parents, Rudolph Schwartz, 38, and Nedyre, 28, in a rented apartment at 1445-D Oak Street, San Francisco, San Francisco, California. Her father was a cigar manufacturer, working on his own account. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| In the 1930 U.S. census, Adele, 12, was living with her parents, Rudolph Schwartz, 49, and
Nedye, 41, at 146 23rd Ave, San Francisco. Her father was still a cigar manufacturer
with employees, they owned the home valued at $4,000, and had a radio set.
Adele's had a younger brother, Abbott, 10. Adele attended Lowell High School in San Francisco, graduating in 1934. She went on to the the University of California, Berkeley, majoring in Education. At the age of 18, she became the lab assistant for Lewis Lawyer, who was working in the field of Plant Pathology. At the age of 19, Adele married Lewis, 30, on 13 Aug 1937 in Yuba City, Sutter, California. She graduated from Berkley in 1938 with a B.A. in child development. In the 1940 U.S. census, Adele Lawyer, 21, and Lewis O., 32, were living at 1645 Portland, Berkeley, Alameda, California. Lewis was a research planner earning $1,900., and they were renting their home for $45.00. Their first daughter Loretta was 1. In the 1950 U.S. census, Adele S. Lawyer, 30, and Lewis O., 41, were living at 4123 Oak Hill Rd., Oakland, Alameda, California. They were both working for a packing corporation, Del Monte, as agricultural researchers. Their daughter Loretta was 11, and living with them was her mother, Nedye E. Schwartz, 60. In 1950, Adele was the leader for her daughter's Cab-Ti-Ta Camp Fire Group. Adele and Lewis had two more children, Melanie Ann and Arthur Lewis. Adele had a long and an exciting career working together with her husband for the Del Monte Corp. as plant pathologists. In 1954, she was recognized in the National Register of Scientific and Technical Personnel. After Adele and Lewis retired, they were involved in raising a variety of iris, and hybridizing tall bearded and Pacific Coast native iris in their one acre yard in the Oakland hills with a view of the bay. They both were active members of various Iris societies, including the Society for Pacific Coast Native Iris and wrote extensively for the Society's newsletter. 
After the death of Lewis in 2001, when the yard work became too much, Adele moved to
Rossmoor in Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County, east of Oakland. She liked to zip
around Rossmoor in her little red golf cart. Here she was living closer to her
brother Abbott and his wife. Her daughter Melanie lived nearby, and her son Artie
about an hour away. She had been spending summers in Hawaii with her daughter and her
family but in 2005, she went to Sea Ranch on the Northern California Coast, with her son and
his family. Seen at the right in 2005, she was still lively at age 87 years.Adele passed away at her home in Rossmoor, Monday, August 27, 2007, surrounded by her close family.
