Lewis and Adele were married 13 Aug 1937 in Yuba City, Sutter, California.
Loretta, their oldest daughter was born in September 1938.
In the 1940 U.S. census, Lewis O. Lawyer, 32, and Adele, 21, were living at 1645 Portland, Berkeley,
Alameda, California with their daughter, Lorretta, 1. They were renting their home for $45.
Lewis was a research planner with an income of $1,900. |
In the 1950 U.S. census, Lewis O. Lawyer, 41, and Adele S., 30, were living at 4123 Oak Hill Rd,
Oakland, Alameda, California. Both were working as agricultural researchers in a packing
corporation. Their daughter Loretta was 11 years. Also in the household was Adele's mother,
Nedye E. Schwartz, 60.
Their Oakland home had a large backyard with a view of the San Francisco Bay. Two more children
arrived in the early 50's— Melanie Ann and Arthur Lewis (Artie).
The photograph above right includes their two younger children in the early 1960's.
Lewis and Adele both worked at the Del Monte Corporation as plant pathologists.
After their retirement, they devoted their time to raising a variety of Iris in their
backyard, and propagating new varieties. They were both active in the American Iris Society,
the Sidney B. Mitchell Iris Society, the Mt. Diablo Iris Society, the UC Botanical Garden, and the
California Horticultural Society. Adele was the Scientific Editor of the national AIS Bulletin.
They were also editors, and officers in some of the other societies. In 1991 they were interviewed
for an oral history project, resulting in a printed transcript entitled Lawyers, Inc. :
partners in plant pathology, horticulture, and marriage.
Lewis and Adele celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1997. At that time
Lewis took the time in their Christmas letter to introduce the progeny resulting
from their marriage, included in the photograph to the left.
Lewis died April 18, 2001. When the yard work became to much for Adele,
she moved to Rossmoor in Walnut Creek, California. She passed away August 27, 2007. |
