Notes:  Otis was born on 1 Mar 1821 at Raynham, Massachusetts.  In the 1850 U.S. census, he was living with his wife Augusta and daughter Mary A., age 1, in Foxborough, County of Norfolk, Massachusetts.  At age 29, he was a bootmaker, and the value of his real estate was $900.  In the 1860 U.S. census, the family was still in Foxborough, and there were an additional three children, Frederick, Arthur, and Edwin.  A relative of his wife, Otis E. Dunbar, age 12, was living with them.  The value of the real estate was now $1500. and his personal estate was $200.

From the civil was pension records, we know that his parents were Chandler Robbins Dean and Abigail Bissn (sp?), both born in Massachusetts.  Otis enrolled in the Union Army at Readville or Foxborough, Massachusetts, on 30 Dec 1863, as a private.  He was in Company E, 56 Mass. Infantry.

Otis contacted rheumatism during the battle of North Aurre (sp?)on 15 Jun 1864.  He was wounded by gun shot in his left arm on 30 Sep 1864 at Prebler Farm, Poplar Springs Church, Virginia.  Taken prisoner on that date at Petersburg, he was confined at Richmond, Virginia.

Otis was paroled at Virginia, Virginia on 8 Oct 1864, and entered the hospital at Annapolis, Maryland on 10 Oct.  He was described as 5'6" tall, with a dark complexion, dark hair, and dark blue eyes.

In the 1870 U.S. census, Otis has become a farmer.  He and his familty are still in Foxborough, with his real estate valued at $2000. and personal estate at $300.  There are now eight children, including William, Ernest, Harry, and Herbert.

The family moved west, and in the 1880 U.S. census they were living in Arcadia Township, Carroll County, Iowa.  Otis is now age 59, and no occupation is listed.  Ernest and Herbert may have died.  Three of his sons are farming.

The family settled in Ontario, San Bernardino, California.  Otis is listed in the California Great Registers as a registered voter in Ontario in 1872, 1894, and 1898.  He was described as being 5'6", of dark complexion, with black eyes and brown hair.  His sons William Edgar and Edwin were also registered voters.  They were all farmers.

In the 1900 U.S. census, Otis and Augusta, along with Mary, Edwin and William were living in the Ontario Township, County of San Bernardino, Califronia.  Also living with them was Mary E. Allen, a servant, who would shortly marry Edwin.  In his later years, Otis was a member of the Ontario Post No. 124, Department of California and Nevada, and the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic).  Otis passed away 21 Mar 1907, and is buried in the Dean family plot in Bellevue Memorial Park, Ontario, California.
