Shortly after James was born, John's family moved west to the Province of Manitoba.  In the 1891 Canada census, they were living in the Rural Muncipality of Cornwallis.  John's brother Franklin was born about 1888, and sister Eva was born in 1892.  In the 1901 Canada census the family was living in the Glenwood/Hayfield area near Brandon, Manitoba.  At age 17, Will was working on the family farm.

In the 1906 Manitoba census, John, 22, was still living with the family.  Living in the household was Margaret C. Braus [Brown], 24, a servant.  He married her on 27 Mar 1907 in Brandon, Manitoba.  According to family sources, they had a family of five children, two of whom died as infants.

In 1935, the family was living in Douglas, Neepawa, Manitoba.  According to the Canada Voters Lists, [John] William was a laborer, and their daughter Edna was a dressmaker.  In 1940, the family was living at 340 Eleventh St., City of Brandon, Manitoba.  John W. was a patrol man, Edna was a dressmaker, and Herbert a laborer.

John and Margaret moved to British Columbia about 1947, when he retired.  In 1949, the Canada Voters Lists identify the family living at 1747 East Fifth Street, Vancouver.  J.W. was a stableman, Margaret a housewife, Edna a seamstress, Herbert a mechanic, and Muriel a nurse.  In 1953, John William is listed as retired, and Edna R. as a saleswoman.
