Notes:  Herbert John Stewart was born 2 Feb 1896 in Beresford, Manitoba.  His parents were Wesley Stewart and Minnie Etta Detwiller.  His mother died 27 Nov 1897, before he was two years old, and he went to live with his maternal grandparents, John and Selina Detwiller.  In the 1901 Canadian census, the family was living in Glenwood, Brandon, Manitoba.  His grandfather was a farmer.  The house was a full one with six of Herbert's aunts and uncles still at home.  He is found living with the family in 1901, 1906, and 1911.

Herbert served in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces of the First World War.  At his medical exam on 13 Nov 1917, he was 21 years 11 months, 5'5" tall, of fair complexion, with brown eyes and black hair.  His current address was 1034 Lorne Avenue, Brandon, Canada, his religion Methodist, and he was a shipping clerk.  His next of kin was his father, Wesley Stewart, living at 620 9th Street, Brandon, Manitoba.  He enlisted at Winnipeg, Manitoba on 30 Jan 1918 as a Private.  He sailed on the S.S. Tunisian, arriving in England on 19 Apr 1918.  He served in the 8th Canadian Battalion in France and in England.  He embarked the H.M.T.S. Empress of Britain on 26 Apr 1919 for the return to Canada.  He was discharged 7 May 1919 in Winnipeg.

Herbert John Stewart, Mildred Houze Taggart Herbert married Mildred Taggart on 5 Jul 1922 in Brandon, Manitoba.  They are seen at right on their wedding day at 230 Princess, Brandon, Mildred's home.  They had one daughter.  He worked for the Canadian National Railroad.  In 1943, the family moved to Vancouver, British Columbia.  Herbert came down with cancer, and died 17 May 1943 in Vancouver.  Mildred died 16 Jun 1973, also in Vancouver.  Their burial place is unknown.
