Notes:  Virgil E. McKain was born 27 Sep 1907 in Logan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas.  His parents were Edwin Marcus McKain and Mary Alice Lavering.  In the 1910 U.S. census, the family was living in Logan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas.  His father Edwin was a general farmer, farming on his own account, and renting.  His older siblings were Charles, 20, farm laborer, Robert, 18, farm laborer, Jesse, 16, farm laborer, Everett, 14, farm laborer, Ernest, 10, Janie, 8, and Arthur, 5,

In the 1915 Kansas State census, Logan Twp., Ottawa County,Virgil had two additional brothers, Archie, 3, and Clyde, 1.  In the 1920 U.S. census, Logan Twp., six of the children were still living at home.  These were Ernest, 20, Jennie, 17, Wesley, 15, Virgil, 12, Archie, 9, and Clyde, 6.  All but Ernest had attended school.

In the 1925 Kansas State census, Logan Twp., the children at home included Jennie, 22, a teacher, Virgil, 17, Archie R., 13, and Clyde C., age not given.  The children had all attended school.  Nine boys in the family was enough for a baseball team, and Virgil's father managed them as "The McKain Nine".  They traveled to pastures and small towns of north central Kansas on Sunday afternoons.  Virgil's brother Archie went on to play major league baseball for several seasons.

In the 1930 U.S. census, Virgil, 22, was living with his brother Ross McKain, 40, his wife, Luella, 42, and daughter Ava, 7, in Meredith Twp., Cloud, Kansas.  His brother owned the farm and was a general farmer.  Virgil was a farm laborer.

Virgil married Esther Alma Smith sometime in the mid 1930's.  In the 1940 U.S. census, Virgil, 32, and Esther, 34, were living in Sheridan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas.  Virgil was a farmer, and they were renting.  He had completed eighth grade, was working on his own account, having worked 24 weeks in 1939, with an income of $600.  He had other sources of income.  They had a son, Duane, age 3, born in Kansas.

Family notes report that they made their home in Delphos, Ottawa, Kansas.  Virgil died 30 Oct 1960.  Esther died 14 Jun 1965.  They are both buried in the Delphos Cemetery, Delphos, Kansas.
