Notes: Jennie Rebecca Hurtig was born 2 Aug 1907 in Ottawa County, Kansas. Her parents were Albert John Hurtgig and Anna Sofia Olander, both born in Sweden. Her five older brothers were Earl F., born in 1892, John V., 1895, George A., 1898, Carl W., 1901, and Leonard, 1904.

In the 1910 U.S. census, the family was living on the family farm in rural Sheridan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas. Her father Albert was a farmer, and raised stock. The children attended school, and when old enough worked on the farm. Her father Albert died in 1921, and her mother continued to run the farm. By the 1930 U.S. census, Earl had become the farm manager, and all of the children were still at home and still single.

Jennie married Lester Lavern Smith on 9 Jul 1932, probably in Sheridan Twp. Ottawa, Kansas. In the 1940 U.S. census, Jennie and Lester were living in Garfield Twp., Ottawa, Kansas. They had four children, namely Wayne, Joan, Virginia, and Deanna. Their fifth child June was born following the census. Lester was a farmer, working on his own account. They were renting, at $5. per month. Jennie had completed four years of high school.

Jennie died 3 Jul 1966, probably in Ottawa County, Kansas. She is buried in the Delphos Cemetery, Delphos, Kansas. Her husband died in 1986, and is buried with her.
