Notes: Velna Violet Smith was born 8 Jun 1903 in Delphos, Ottawa, Kansas. She was the oldest child of Oscar James Smith and Ethel G. Haley. Her brother Clement was born in 1905. In the 1905 Kansas State census, the family was living in Logan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas. Her father was renting the land he farmed. Her brother Bernice was born in 1908.

The 1910 U.S. census, Logan Twp., enumerated Oscar J. Smith, 29, general farmer, renting, with his wife, Ethel Smith, 25. Their children were Velma V., 6, Claude, 4, and Bernice B., 2. Velna's brother Darrell was born in 1911, died 1912, and her sister Marine was born in 1913, died 1913.

In the 1915 Kansas State census, Velna was living with her parents and brothers in Blaine Twp., Ottawa, Kansas. Her father owned the land he was farming, with a mortgage. In the 1920 U.S. census, and the 1925 Kansas State census, the family was living in Centre Twp., Ottawa, Kansas. Her father owned the farm, with a mortgage.

Velna married Howard Lee Henderson about 1925/1926. In November 1926, when her mother died, the couple was living in Quenemo, Osage, Kansas. In the 1930 U.S. census, the couple was living at 502 Indiana St., Holton City, Jackson, Kansas. Howard was a wire chief for the telephone company. His father Will P. Henderson, 62, was living with them. The marriage ended in divorce before 1937.

In the 1940 U.S. census, Velna, now 36 and single, was living by herself at 4106 Hamilton, Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska. She had completed four years of high school and was a clerk, working in the local courthouse. She was renting for $12. per month, had worked 48 weeks in 1939, and had earned $700.

Velna married Leonard Geiger some time after 1940, probably in Nebraska. Leonard died in Feb 1974. Velna died 14 Jun 1981 in Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska. Her burial place is not known.
