Notes:  James Franklin Spainhower was born 1 Aug 1895 in Kansas City, Missouri.  His parents were Evington [or Arnold] Spainhower and Elizabeth Winkle.  In his younger years, he went by his middle name or nickname, Frank J.  In the 1900 USA census, the family was living at 7613 Cottage Grave Ave., Chicago, Illinois.  He had a younger brother Emery born in Oct 1898 in Missouri.  His father was a teamster.  His parents had two more children, namely Hattie born about 1903, and Albert born about 1906.  His father evidently died before 1910. In the 1910 USA census, Jame's family is found living with his uncle, George R. Johnsein, at 9122 Jeffery Ave., Chicago.  The household consisted of his uncle, two of his uncles children, and his family.  His mother was a housekeeper in a private home, and James was a rivet heater in a car shop.

James married Harriett Fishback on 27 May 1914 in Los Angeles County, California.  Their son John Everett was born 27 Aug 1914, probably in Alhambra.  In 1917 when James registered for the World War draft, the family was living at 407 S. Palm Avenue in Alhambra.  He was a salesman for the Jewel Tea Company in Los Angeles.  He was described as being tall and of medium build, with blue eyes and light brown hair.

In the 1920 USA census, James and Harriet, along with their son, were living at 123 S. Palm Avenue, Alhambra.  James was now a fireman.  The couple evidently divorced, as Harriet married George Baisley in the 1920's.  In the 1930 USA census, James was a lodger in the home of his ex-sister-in-law, Edith Fishback.  James continued working as a fireman.  In 1937, he was a member of Company No. 20, 'A' Platoon, of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

In the 1940 USA census, James was still a lodger with his ex-sister-in-law, Edith Fishback.  It is not known if James ever remarried.  He died 20 Jun 1978 in Canoga Park, Los Angeles County, California.  His last residence was in Simi Valley, Ventura County.  He was buried 23 Jun 1978 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, California.
