Notes:  Vernon LeRoy Peterson was born 14 Oct 1917 in Eureka, Juab, Utah.  He was the eighth child of Niels Alma Peterson and Annie Sophia Walker.  His father Niels was a stationery engineer for the mines.
His brother Karl Alma was born in 1901, and sister Verda in 1904 in Hinckley, Millard, Utah.  His brother Laurence was born in 1905, brother Francis Leon in 1907, sister Clara in 1910, brother Owen Rumel in 1912, and sister Zella in 1915, all in Eureka.

In late 1918, the Peterson family moved to Provo, Utah, Utah.  In the 1920 U.S. census, the family was living at 358 4th Street South, Provo Ward 2.  They owned their house with a mortgage, and his father Niels was an engineer for the Union Pacific railroad.  The children were Karl, 18, Verda, 16, Laurence, 14, Leone, 12, Clara, 9, Owen, 7, Zella, 5, and Vernon, 2.  Vernon's last sister Elayne was born in Provo.

In the 1930 U.S. census, the Peterson family was living at 358 4th Street South, Provo.  They owned their house, valued at $3,000. and owned a radio set.  Vernon's father Niels was a solicitor for a correspondence school.  The children at home were Lawrence, 24, solicitor for a correspondence school, Clara, 19, stenographer for a wholesale warehouse, Owen, 17, Zella, 14, Vernon, 12, and Elaine, 9.

During World War II, Vernon enlisted in the U.S. Army on 2 Mar 1942 in Los Angeles, California.  At the time he had completed two years of college, and his civiliam occupation was in the field of semiskilled mechanics and repairmen, railroad and carshop.  He was 70 inches tall, and weighed 164 pounds.  He served as a Private.

Vernon LeRoy Peterson married Shirley Zabriskie on 8 Mar 1945 in Provo, Utah, Utah.  Shirley worked to put Vernon through college, where he earned a business degree from Brigham Young University.  For twelve years, from 1951 to 1963, they made their home in Idaho Falls, Bonneville, Idaho, where Vernon worked for the Atomic Energy Commission and for its subcontractors.  They are listed in the Idaho Falls, Idaho, City Directory living at 841 Crestmont Avenue, Idaho Falls, from 1954 through 1957.  In 1960 they are listed at 442 K, Idaho Falls.  Vernon was listed as an accountant for the Atomic Energy Commission (1954); an employee and purchasing agent for Westinghouse (1956 - 1957); and an administrative superintendant for H K Ferguson Co. (1960).

They had a family of one son and four daughters.  The birthplaces of their children are unknown.  Following Idaho Falls, they lived in various places, including Ohio, finally settling in San Mateo, California.

Shirley was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis around 1972, which progressively incapacitated her.  Vernon died 23 July 1984 in a San Francisco, California, hospital following a short illness.  He was buried 3 Aug 1984 in the Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, California.
