Notes: Hans and Mary probably met at the Friday night dances held on the second floor
of the Hamiln home in Santa Clara, Washington, Utah. He evidently
"swept her off her feet." They were married by Marius Ensign. Source
No. 714 gives a marriage date of 11 April 1875, but does not list a
place. Source No. 722 has a marriage place of Santa Clara.

Hans and Mary moved to Nevada where Josephine was born in 1876. She was followed
by Ida, born in 1877 in Jack Rabbit, Nevada. The family was living in Spring
Valley, Lincoln, Nevada in 1880 when Henry was born. They moved to Jackson County,
Oregon, where George was born in 1882. They finally settled in Alhambra California,
where Frank was born in 1885, Lillian in 1887, and Mabel in 1889.
In the 1900 U.S. census, the entire family was living at the family residence at
336 North Wilson Avenue, Alhambra, Los Angeles, California. Their beloved daughter
Josie, by then a teacher, died in May 1902.
By the 1910 U.S. census, the last of their children had grown and married,
and Hans and Mary were living alone. In the 1920 U.S. census, their daughter Mabel
Ferrell, her husband Thomas, and boys Frederick and Clifford, were living with them.
Hans and Mary are seen with five of their children and their spouses in 1916 in the
photographs to the right. Hans died in 1921, and Mary in
1936. They are buried in the San Gabriel Cemetery,
San Gabriel, California. |
