Notes:  Edith Swain was born 26 Dec 1877 in Oakland, Alameda, California.  She was the fifth of nine children of Alfred G. Swain and Harriet Catherine Shaw.  In the 1880 US census, Edith, 4, was living with her family on Linden in Oakland, Alameda County.  Her father Alfred was a real estate agent, and her mother was listed as a house keeper.  Her siblings were Florence, 12, Alfred 11, Louise, 8, Lincoln 7, and Luther, 2.  The older three were attending school.

Edith was active in the social life of Oakland, as seen from the numerous newspapers articles in which her name appeared.  As a young girl she took part in school programs and entered bread in the Marysville Fair.  She is pictured with her graduating classmates in 1899, and took part in a vocal recital.  She assisted with elaborate tea and garden parties, in which she also participated in the musical programs.  She was a member of the Church of the Advent Choir, participating in their musical presentations.

In the 1900 US census, Edith, 23, was living with her family in a rented house at 1505 Tenth Avenue, Oakland, Ward 7.  Her father was a bookeeper.  Her siblings were Florence, 32, a stenographer, Louise, 28, a stenographer; Lincold, 26, a clerk; Luther, 22, a cashier stock broker; Normand, 19, a cashier stock broker; and Ann T., 14, and Alice, 12, both at school.  Also in the household was Grant Vanslyck, 31, a servant.

Neither Edith nor the family have yet to be found in the 1910 US census.  Her father died on 20 Apr 1916 and her mother died 7 Nov 1917, both in San Francisco.

Edith married George Washington Samuels on 17 May 1919 in the home of her sister Ann and brother-in-law on Clay Street, San Francisco.  Following their wedding they went on a honeymoon trip through the south.

In the 1920 US census, Edith, 39, and Geo. W., 56, were living in Vacaville.  George was a fruit farmer working on his own account, and their home was mortgaged.  She was registered as a Republican in the Vacaville voter records.

In the 1930 US census, Edith, 54, and George W., 67, and Edith, 54, were living at 154 Gates Canyon Road, Vacaville.  Their farm was valued at $5000, and George was now an employer on the fruit farm.

In the 1940 US census, Edith, 64, and George W., 78, lived on Pleasants Valley Road, Vacaville.  They owned their house valued at $3,500.  Edith was a piano teacher, and George was no longer working.

In the 1950 US census, Edith, 68, and George W., 88, were still living on North Lagoon or Pleasant Valley Road, Vacaville.  Edith was still teaching piano, but George was no longer able to work.  They had supplemental income of $1800.

George died 28 Oct 1957 at age 95, in Vacaville.  He was buried 31 Oct 1957 in the Samuels plot, Tulocay Cemetery, Napa.  Edith died 19 Jan 1961 in Sierra Madre, Los Angeles, California.  She is buried in the Mount Tamalpais Cemetery, Marin, California.
