Notes: Irene was born eight days before the death of her mother. Although Irene was formally named Sarah Elizabeth, the same as her mother, she instead was consistently referred to as just Irene.

Irene was most probably raised by her step-mother, Mary Edgerton Berryhill.

Irene had three children with her husband before he left her. She subsequently had one child with an unknown man and then two more children with another man — neither of whom were married to her. All six of the children were named with the McDonald surname of her husband. Because of these unconventional relationships Irene's family has not been very open to talking about the history of this branch of the family.
