He served in the War of 1812 from 27 Apr 1812 until 26 Oct 1812, enlisting in Dayton, Ohio.  His commander was Gen. William Hull, who was terribly unsuccessful, and surrendered to the British in Detroit on 16 Aug 1812.  Taken to Montreal until exchanged, his men were exonerated.

James Jackson married Elizabeth Hooker on 6 Oct 1816 in Montgomery, Ohio.  Fourteen children were born of this union.  In the 1820 U.S. census, James Jackson and his wife Elizabeth were living in Wayne, Randolph (now Delaware), Indiana.  Their children, Hiram and Rachael, were both under ten years.  James bought land in this county on 20 Dec 1823.

In the 1830 U.S. census, James and Elizabeth were living in the Liberty Twp., Delaware, Indiana.  They now had seven children.  They moved to Wells County, Indiana on 17 January 1937. They along with Harry Mossburg were the first settlers in Liberty Twp., Wells County.  James was granted a land patent in Sec. 10 on 1 Aug 1837 upon which he built a log cabin.  His son Hiram Jackson was granted a land patent in Sec. 15 on 1 Aug 1837.

In the 1840 U.S. census, James and Elizabeth were living in Liberty Twp., Wells, Indiana.  James was now identified as working in agriculture.  They had seven children still at home.  On the first Monday of April 1842, the first township election was held.  James Jackson and John McFarren were among the nine voters.

In the 1850 U.S. census, James Jackson, 63, and his wife Elizabeth, 53, were still in Liberty Twp., Wells County.  James is now identified as a farmer.  The children at home were Levi, 26, William, 23, Samuel, 16, Hannah, 16, and Benjamin, 1.  James' real estate was valued at $800.  Levi, William, and Samuel were also farmers, with Levi's real estate valued at $1,000. and William's at $300.
