In 1900 Henry was living in Ford County, Illinois, with Mary and their seven living out of eight total children.  In 1910 Henry resided in Osceola County, Iowa, with Mary and nine living children, all of whom were born in Illinois.

Bertram family farm Later, Henry owned his family's home place on five-mile creek, five miles west of Herman, Minnesota, on Highway 27.  But he lost it when he encountered heavy medical bills — after he developed cancer of the mouth and face.  He had chewed snuff many years.  Henry went to Mayo clinic but nothing could be done.  His daughter-in-law Bertha told of the weeping mass of open sores on his face.  The bandages had to be changed constantly and they had a horrible smell.  When Henry died, his daughter Minnie burned all of his bedding.
