Notes:  Frank was descended from an early American pioneer family.  His forefathers came to Virginia from England and then, as the pioneer spirit again caught them, succeeding generations moved to Kentucky.  In Kentucky the family united by marriage with the Coopers of Massachusetts and the Smiths of Kentucky.

Frank's father and mother were born near Bowling Green, Kentucky.  They moved to Warren County, Illinois, where both died while their children were still small.  The rest of the children's youth was spent under the tender care of a maiden aunt, Matilda Smith.  Frank had four brothers; Isaac Smith Butler was one of them.

In 1886 Frank moved with his first wife to Petersburg, Boone County, Nebraska.  She died there in 1887.  Seven months later, in 1888, Frank married his second wife in Petersburg, Nebraska.

In April 1894 Frank travelled to California, stopping first at Riverside for a few weeks and then going to Napa.  His family followed in July 1894.  Since then Frank was a continuous resident of Napa until his death.

Frank passed on at age 72 years, 10 months, and 20 days — following a long illness which had confined him to his residence at the corner of Spencer and B Streets.  The address there from before 1908 until the 1920s was 104 B Street — the City of Napa then reidentified that residence as 1406 B Street.
