formally or informally adopted by his stepfather, Campbell Robert Whitthorne (Cam),
and thereafter used the surname Whitthorne. In 1917 Stanton at age 26 completed his draft Registration Card. He was then living in Vallejo, California, and working as a shipfitters helper at Mare Island Naval Yard. He was described as being of medium height and medium build with blue eyes and brown hair. In 1930 Stanton at age 39 was single, working as a postal clerk, and living in San Francisco with his mother and step-father. In 1930 Stanton registered to vote as a Democrat.
