Notes: *Birth year conflict! Five U.S. Censuses plus the California Death Index report a total of four different years of Mamie's birth as follows:
Census of 1900=birth in 1881, 1910=1885, 1920=1888, 1930=1885, 1940=1872, Index=1881
Only one year can be the correct year of Mamie's birth. The 1910, 1920, and 1930 Censuses report that Mamie was born in 1885 or 1888; however, that is unlikely because Mamie's mother Susan's age at Mamie's birth would have been 48 or 51. The 1940 Census is unlikely because in 1872 the family was probably then in Texas — not Louisiana. The 1900 Census was closest to Mamie's birthdate, was more contemporary, and more likely correct. In addition, the California Death Index agrees with it. Given the above data, I am reporting Mamie's birth year as "1881".

Mamie's parents, John and Susan Martin, moved their family from Texas to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, by 1880. They were in Louisiana in 1881 when their daughter Mamie was born.

John and his family next moved west to Napa, California, between 1881 and 1900. They and their children were there in 1900. Mamie was then 19.

In 1904 at age 23 Mamie married David Hines, a carpenter who was about 34 years old. She went by the name Mamie until after 1910 — and by 1920 had switched to the name Mary which she used thereafter. Mamie spent her married years in Vallejo, California.

In 1955 Mamie passed on at age 74.
