Notes: Before they were married, Conrad and Freda were with a group of nine Turlock youths who
in August 1946 chartered a sailboat at 6:00 P.M. at Owen Reservoir. They planned to
join in a steak bake after a two-hour cruise. However, just before dark the mast broke off and the
youths drifted for hours. To protect themselves from the cold they used the sail to make
improvised coats. Finally, about daylight they drifted onto a sand bar. One of the group
was able to swim ashore and have their boat towed to the boathouse landing.
