Notes:  Bernice Boyd Smith was born 1 Jul 1907 in Minneapolis, Ottawa, Kansas.  His parents were Oscar James Smith and Ethel G. Haley.  His older siblings were Velna, born in 1903, and Clement, born in 1905.  In the 1910 U.S. census, the family was living in Logan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas.  His father Oscar was a general farmer.  A brother Darrell was born in 1911, died 1912, and a sister Marine, was born in 1913, died 1913.

In the 1915 Kansas census, the family was living in Blaine Twp., Ottawa County.  By the 1920 U.S. census, they had moved to Center Twp., Ottawa.  In the 1925 Kansas State census, Center Twp., Bernice was 16.  His mother Ethel died 12 Nov 1926.  Bernice is not found in the 1930 U.S. census.

In the 1940 U.S. census, Bernice, 32, was living in Boise City, Ada, Idaho.  He had obtained two years of high school, and was a bottler for a beverage company.  In 1935 he had been living in Minneapolis, Kansas.  The supplemental census line reports that his usual occupation was telephone lineman.  In 1941, according to the Boise, Idaho, City Directory, he was living at 304 N. 11th, Boise, and was the plant foreman for Inland Coca Cola Bottling Co.

According to family notes, Bernice married Gwendolyn Elizabeth Ellerson on 22 Dec 1945 in Boise, Ada Idaho.  According to the Boise, Idaho, City Directory for the years 1955 through 1958, their residence was on West State (RD1).  Bernice was a foreman, then superintendant, at the Nagel Beverage Company.  They had no children.

Gwendolyn died 9 Dec 1962, in Boise, Ada, Idaho.  Bernice died 22 Sep 1989, in Nampe, Ada, Idaho.  Both are buried in Dry Creek Cemetery*, Boise, Ada, Idaho.
