Denmark. She was the third child of thirteen, born to Hans Johansen & Maren
Rasmusdatter. She had an older half sister,
Dorthea Hansen. Frederikke Margrethe was baptised 27 Sep 1885 in the
Søllested Kirke. She appears in the 1890 Danish census records with her
family in Søllested.|
Frederikke Margrethe Johansen was confirmed 1 Oct 1899. At that time she was working on a farm in Barløse parish, Båg, Odense, and was a student. In 1904, Frederikke Margrete and her older brother Johan Peder traveled by way of Liverpool, England, aboard the S.S. Carpathis to the United States. They arrived in New York on 2 Sep 1904. Their destination was Perth Amboy, New Jersey, where their half-sister Dorthea Hansen was living with her husband Christian Møller. Her sister Rasmine may have followed in 1907.
According to family sources, Margaret (notice the Americanized name) married Nels Oscar Neilsen on 28 Jan 1911 in Brooklyn, New York. She had become a naturalized citizen in 1910, and had an eighth grade education. When Nels registered for the World War II draft in 1918, they were living at 207 Grant Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. In the 1920 USA census, they were renting a residence at 199 Grant Street, Perth Amboy. Nels was an insurance agent. They had three children - Lillian, Frederick, and Helen. In 1927. the family was living at 444 Steadman Place, Perth Amboy, and Nels was a clerk.
In the 1930 USA census, Margaret and Nels were living at 556 New Brunswick Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. They were renting for $27.00 monthly. Nels was a shipping clerk for the local chemical works. Their oldest child, Lillian, was working as a librarian. The others, Frederick, Helen, Cecelia, and Ruth, were in school. In 1935, Nels and Margaret were living at 429 Lawton Place, Perth Amboy. Nels was a clerk, Lillian a librarian, and Fred was a clerk.
In the 1940 USA census, Margaret was living with her daughter Lillian and Lillian's husband, Hildour Nelson, at 455 Lawrie Street, Perth Amboy. Her daughters Cecilia and Ruth were living in the household, as well as Hildour's father Remus Hildour. Nels was living elsewhere. In 1942, when Nels registered for the World War II draft, Margaret was living at 400 E. Avenue, Perth Amboy.
Margaret moved to California. In 1947 she was living at 427 N. Marengo Avenue, Pasadena. In 1953, she was living with her daughter Cecelia at 314 N. Holliston Avenue, Pasadena. According to the California Death Index, Margaret F. Neilson, born 22 Aug 1885 in Denmark, died 28 Feb 1960, in Los Angeles County, California. Her burial place is unknown.
