Notes: Iona Sarah Hooks was born 21 Feb 1915 in Provo, Utah, Utah. She was the fourth child of James Reece Hooks and Louisa Bertha Muhlestein. Her older siblings were Bertha Louisa, born in 1908, Gladys, born in 1911, and James Arthur, born in 1913. Her younger sister was Anna Ida, born in 1916.

In the 1920 U.S. census, the Hooks family was living on E. 6th North, in Provo Ward 7, Utah, Utah. They owned the residence free of mortgage. Her father James was a farmer, farming on his own account. The children were Bertha L., 11, Gladdys, 8, James A., 6, Iona, 4 11/12, and Anna I, 3 3/12. The older three children attended school. Enumerated next was Elizabeth C. Hooks, 89, a widow, Iona's paternal grandmother.

In the 1930 U.S. census, the Hooks family was living at 691 E. 6th North in Provo, Utah, Utah. Her father James was a teamster in the sand and gravel industry. Her mother Louisa was doing housework in a private home. The children were Bertha L., 21, a stenographer in a doctor's office; Gladys, 19, a secretary for a school; and James A., 17, Iona S., 15, and Anna I, 13. All of the children attended school.

Iona Sarah Hooks, 21, married Layton Ernest Ford, 20, on 26 Aug 1936 in Utah County, Utah. At right is a copy of their Wedding Reception Invitation. They had one daughter, LoRetta, born 21 Oct 1938 in Reno, Washoe, Nevada.

The 1938 and 1939 Sparks, Nevada, City Directories list them living at 1129½ B, and Layton (or Leighton) is working for the Southern Pacific Co.

In the 1940 U.S. census, Iona and Leighton were living at 1129½ B [Street], Sparks, Washoe, Nevada. Leighton was a machinist apprentice, working for the railroad. They both had completed four years of high school. Their daughter Loretta was one year.

The marriage ended in divorce on 3 Jul 1943, Provo, Utah, Utah. Iona returned to the family residence at 691 E. 6th North, Provo. The 1944 Provo, Utah, City Directory lists her as a waitress, and the 1946 Provo, Utah, City Directory lists her as a cook.

Iona married Owen Rumel Peterson on 30 Nov 1952, probably in Provo, Utah, Utah. They had no children of their own. In the 1955 and 1977 Provo, Utah, City Directory they are listed as living at 691 E. 600 North, Provo, Utah.

Owen died 13 Nov 1988, place unknown. Iona died shortly thereafter, on 30 Nov 1988 in Provo, Utah, Utah. They are buried in the Timpanogos Memorial Gardens, Orem, Utah.
