Notes:  Dorothy Veatrice Carrel was born 23 Jan 1904 in Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama.  She was the first child of Frank Elliott Carrel and Myrtle Cox.  Her brother Frank Elliott, Jr., was born 13 Jan 1907.

In the 1910 U.S. census, Dorothy was living with her family at 209 5th Street North in Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama.  Her father Frank was a bookkeeper for a cotton company.  They were renting their house.  The children were Dorothy V., 6, and Frank E., Jr., 3.

In Sep 1918 when Dorothy's father Frank registered for the World War I draft, the family was living at 712 N. 21st St., Birmingham, Alabama.  Her father Frank was a coal dealer for the Wittichen Coal Co.

According to the U.S. City Directories, Dorothy's family moved often during their years in Birmingham, Alabama.  Dorothy appears in the Birmingham, Alabama, City Directory, 1917 and 1919, living at 712 N 21st with her parents.

In the 1920 U.S. census, Dorothy was still living with her family at 712 N. 21st St., Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama.  They were listed as lodgers with Ernest Turner, 46, his wife Willie E. Turner, 37, and their son Jessie E. Turner, 17.  Her father Frank was the secretary for a coal company.  Her mother Myrtle was the manager for a hat shop.  The children were Dorothy V., 16, no occupation, and Frank E., Jr., 13, attending school.

Dorothy V. Carrel, 16, married Leonard B. Grefsing, 21, on 25 Aug 1920 in Irondale, Jefferson, Alabama.  The marriage license reveals that her father had to sign, giving permission for her to marry at the age of 16.  The marriage did not last.  Dorothy married again to Vernon Firth.  Her sister Myrtle Jeanne was born 28 May 1923 in Jacksonville, Duval, Florida.

In the 1930 U.S. census, Dorothy Firth, 26, and her husband Vernon Firth, 27, were living with her parents at at 105 Acton Ave., Homewood, Jefferson, Alabama.  Vernon worked for a hotel.  Her parents, Frank E. Carrel, 51, and Myrtle Carrel,46, owned their home, valued at $6,000. and had a radio set.  Frank was an accountant for a bank.  Her brother Frank E., 23, was a claim's adjuster for automobile insurance.  Her sister Myrtle Jean was 6 years old.  Also in the household was Josephine Cox, 67, her maternal grandmother.

In the 1931 Birmingham, Alabama, City Directory, Dorothy and Robert V. Firth were living at 2828 Norwood Blvd., Birmingham.  Robert was a bellman for the Tutwiller Hotel.  Dorothy's marriage to Vernon Firth did not last long.  In the Dallas, Texas, City Directory, 1932 Dorothy Carrel (maiden name) was listed living with her parents at 2807 Knight, Dallas.

On 14 Jul 1936, Veatrice Carrel, age 27, married Joe AL Wafer, 37, in Indiana.  They were both residents of Detroit Michigan.  Dorothy, was now using her middle name, and she shaved 4 years off her age, giving a birthdate of 23 Jan 1909 instead of 23 Jan 1904.

In the 1940 U.S. census, Beatrice [sic] Wafer, 31, and Joe A. Wafer, 40, were living at 12753 Northlawn, Detroit, Wayne Michigan.  Joe had completed four years of high school and was the secretary for transportation for an auto manufacturing company.  Beatrice had completed four years of college, with no occupation listed.  This marriage also did not last long.  Veatrice Wafer and Joe AL Wafer were granted a divorce on 9 Oct 1941 in Wayne County, Michigan.

At some earlier point in time, Dorothy attended the University of Birmingham, and became a registered nurse.  During World War II, Veatrice joined the U.S. Army, 8th Air Force Division, and served as a flight nurse, stationed in Anchorage, Alaska.

Veatrice later joined her parents living in Salt Lake City, Utah, and at some point in time converted to the LDS Church.  Beatrice Carrel is listed in the Salt Lake City, Utah, City Directory, 1959 and 1960 with her widowed mother Myrtle C. Carrel at 1404 4th E, Salt Lake City.  In 1960 she is listed as a nurse at the Brooks Nursing Home.

Veatrice Carrel married Lyle G. Stewart on 15 Aug 1960 in Provo, Utah, Utah.  They made their home at 1440 E 200 S, Pleasant Grove, Utah, Utah.  In 1962, her mother Myrtle Cox Carrel came to live with them, passing away in 1965.  Veatrice was active in the Pleasant Grove Garden Club, serving at least four terms as President.  Her name appears more than 60 times in the local newspapers.  In September 1964 she rescued a three-year-old boy from an irrigation ditch near her home.

Dorothy Veatrice Carrel Stewart died 3 Jul 2003 at her home in Pleasant Grove, Utah, Utah.  Services were held 8 Jul 2003 at the Battlecreek 1st Ward LDS Chapel, Pleasant Grove.  Her obituary, military record, and headstone give an age of 85, birthdate of 23 Jan 1918.  Her Social Secord record more accurately reflects her age as 99, birthdate 23 Jan 1904.  She is buried in the Timpanogos Memorial Gardens, Orem, Utah, Utah.
