Notes:  Vernon Worthen was born 19 Apr 1895 in St. George, Washington, Utah.  He was the fifth of nine children of George Washington Vernon and Leonora Cannon Woodbury, both born in England.  Vernon lived his entire life in St. George.
In the 1900 U.S. census, Vernon, 5, was living with his parents, George W. Worthen, 40, and Lenora W., 34, in St. George, Washington, Utah.  His father was teamster and they owned their home free of mortgage.  His siblings were George W., Jr., 13, Leonora, 11, Roena, 9, Maida, 7, Annie, 3, and Sarah, 9 months.

In the 1910 U.S.census, Vernon, 14, was living with his parents, George W. Worthen, 50 and Lenora, 44, in St. George, Washington, Utah.  his father was the watermaster for the city of St. George.  Vernon was a farm hand on the home farm and going to school.  His siblings at home were Rowena, 19, Maida, 17, Annie, 12, Sarah, 10, Paul, 8, and Lucile, 5.

Vernon attended Dixie schools, and graduated from Dixie College in 1918 with a teacher's certificate.  He married Lorna Perkins on 11 Jun 1918 in the St. George Temple, St. George, Washington, Utah.  He entered the U.S. Army on 7 May 1919, serving for a year, partially in France.

In the 1920 U.S. census, Vernon Worthen, 24, and his wife Lorna, 22, were living in Glenwood, Sevier, Utah.  Vernon was a public school teacher.  They were renting their home.  Their first daughter, Aileen Worthen, was born 17 Jan 1920 in Glenwood, Sevier, Utah.  Their second daughter, Nevada Worthen, was born in Nevada in 1922, but died 10 Mar 1924 of bronchial pneumonia in St. George.  Their first son, Robert Verne Worthen, was born in 1924 in St. George, but also died of bronchial on 13 Feb 1926 in St. George.

In the 1930 U.S. census, Vernon Worthen, 34, and his wife, Lorna, 32, were living on Main Street, St. George, Washington, Utah.  Vernon was a Principal in the district school.  They owned their home, valued at $2,500.  Their daughter Aileen was 10.  Their second son Vernon LaVon was born in 1931 in St. George.  Also in 1931, Vernon graduated from Brigham Young University.

In the 1940 U.S. census, Vernon Worthen, 44, and his wife Lorna P., 42, were living at 139 West 100 North, St. George. Washington, Utah.  Vernon was still a principal, and had completed 4 years of college.  Lorna had completed, 2 years of college.  They owned their home, valued at $3,000.  Their children were Aileen, 20, 2 years of college and working as a waitress, and Vernon La Von, 8, 2 years of school.

On 27 Apr 1942, Vernon Worthen, 47, registered for the World War II "Old Man's Draft".  He was working for the Washington County School District, and was described as 5'10", 195 lbs., with blue eyes, black hair and a ruddy dark complexion.

In the 1950 U.S. census, Vernon Worthen, 55, and his wife Lorna, 52, were living at 200 S 100 W Lab, St. George, Washington, Utah.  Vernon was the principal of an elementary school, and Lorna was a typist for a newspaper.  Their son, V. LaVon was 18.  Enumerated next to them was his mother, Lenora W. Worthen, 84, a widow.

Vernon Worthen was active in the L.D.S. church, serving as counselor and as bishop.  He headed the committee to raise funds for the remodeling of the St. George Tabernacle.  He was also active in the community.  He was a school teacher and principal for 41 years, finally retiring in 1950.  He served on the Washington County Welfare Board, and was chairman for 20 years.  He was a St. George City Councilman for 10 years, and director and president of the St. George Savings and Loan for 33 years.  He was the County Bee Inspector for 40 Years.  For his service and dedication he received many Rewards and Honors, including being the Grand Marshal of the 1980 Washington County Fair.

Vernon's wife Lorna died 5 Oct 1982, in the St. George Care Center, St. George.  She had been incapitated for some years, and Vernon had spent many hours caring for her and other patient's needs in the center.

Vernon Worthen died 28 Nov 1984 at home in St. George, Washington, Utah.  Services were held 1 Dec 1984 in the Eighth Ward Chapel.  He was buried in the St. George City Cemetery, alongside his wife, with full military rites by the Lester Keate Post #90 of the American Legion, of which he was a founding member.
