ST. GEORGE  —  Vernon Worthen, age 90, a well-known St. George native, died peacefully in his sleep at his home Nov. 28, 1984.  The fifth of nine children, Vernon was born April 19, 1895, in St. George to George W. and Leonora Woodbury Worthen.
He  married  Lorna Perkins of Moapa Valley June 11 in the St. George Temple and they had 64 wonderful anniversaries together before her death Oct 5, 1982.  They were the parents of four children, two of whom died in infancy.
Vernon received his education in Dixie, in her schools, churches and environment.  He graduated from Dixie College in 1918 and Brigham Young University in 1931.  Following a year of World War I military service, partially in France, he entered the teaching profession as a teacher and principal for 41 years before retiring in 1950.  He was also a mason, carpenter, gardener, salesman and part-time bookkeeper.  He served 36 years on the Washington County Welfare Board, 20 years as chairman.  He was St. George City Councilman for 10 years.  He was director and president of the St. George Savings and Loan for many years.  He was the County Bee Inspector from 1941 to 1981.
Called as a counselor in 1925, he served as a bishop from 1930 to 1940, then in St. George Stake Presidency for 10 years.  Later, in 1963-66, he served in a bishopric while the old South Ward chapel was uneder modification.  He headed the committee to raise funds for the remodeling of the St. George Tabernacle and served as resource to the movie "Windows of Heaven."
Worthen received many honors during his lifetime for services freely given.  He was honored by the St. George Area Chamber of Commerce as Distinguised Senior Citizen.  He was presented with a distinguised citizen award from Dixie College in 1978 and was Grand Marshal of the Washington County Fair in 1980.  He was honored as "Most Dedicated Family Member" by the St. George Care Center in 1982.  Perhaps the greatest honors of man have been the thousands of family members of Dixie's noteworthy who turned to him for friendly strength and encouragement in word and song in hundreds of funerals.  His beautiful tenor voice was shared in quartets, solos, leading musical gatherings, etc.  No one has been more sought after nor participated more willingly.
