George Pettit married Sarah E. Corey in Manhattan, New York, New York, on 20 Oct 1868. He gave his age as 21, she was 17

No census record has been found for the couple in 1870. However, George, 20, is found with his parents, Thomas Pettit, 46, and Leah, 45, living in Newark Ward 5, Essex, New Jersey. He and his father were both boatmen. Living in the household were his siblings Stephen, 23, a boatman, Mary, 16, Elizabeth, 10, and Robert, 5. Also in the household was Kesiah Brown, 74, his maternal grandmother.
