Notes: The two photos at the right show two views of the 827 Church Street house
circa 1951. The house was of the "craftsman" style that had a full, above-ground basement
under it. Wide front stairs led up to a "L"-shaped porch. The living room and large
dining room both had hardwood floors, and both had doors onto the porch. The kitchen
was small but had a large breakfast nook attached, and, like all of the rooms, had a high flat
ceiling and picture moldings high on the walls. There were three bedrooms: the front one
occupied by Bill and Nora and the middle one by Bud. The bathroom was in back, adjacent
to the enclosed back porch and back stairs. The toilet had a water reservoir near the
ceiling, and a pull cable hanging down to flush the toilet.
Bill installed a steel ladder on the wall in the back porch up to the large attic. He also
installed an electric fan in the attic (which had a front window) to circulate air to help cool
the house during the hot Napa Summers.
Two cars could park end-to-end in the garage. Bill filled the basement with left-over gas
and electrical equipment that he accumulated over the years from his various jobs. He
enjoyed re-wiring the house and adding electrical circuits. Sometimes he would put on his
climbing spikes and go up the electrical pole out front to "adjust" the PG&E's lines to better
satisfy his desires.
Bill also built a shower and urinal for himself in the basement near the washing machine and
sink. He pulled down roll-up window curtains on three sides to create the private
shower area. He always shaved with a straight razor (whick Dan now has). |
