Notes:Gordon John Carpenter* was born in North Dakota circa 1908.  His father was Charles P. Carpenter, a deputy auditor for the county treasurer's office, who had been born in North Dakota.  His mother, Edna B. Carpenter, had been born in Minnesota.  He had a brother, two years older, named Ralph C. Carpenter.  In the 1910 and 1920 U.S. censuses, the family was living on Hill Avenue in Grafton, Walsh County, North Dakota.  In the 1930 U.S. census, their residence was on North Third Street in Grand Forks, Grand Forks County, North Dakota.  His father was now a paper salesman.

According to family records, Gordon married Nellie Frances Noble in Bismark, North Dakota on 8 May 1937.  Their first daughter was born in North Dakota in 1938.  In the 1940 U.S. census, they were living in Amidon, Slope, North Dakota.  Gordon was a newspaper printer, and had completed five or more years of college.

The family moved to Southern California.  Their son was born in 1944, and another daughter in 1949.  In 1950, they were living at 11341 Lambert Avenue, El Monte.  He and his wife were registered to vote as Democrats.  This was their long term residence.

*Very little was known about this individual except that he was known by the nickname "Carp".  After an older relative said his name was John, a Gordon John Carpenter was found listed in the 1950 Los Angeles Voter Registration records as living in the same household as Mrs. Nellie N. Carpenter, his wife.  Then census records for Gordon J. Carpenter, with a birth date of 1908, were found in North Dakota.  On 3 Jun 1963, Amy Olson stated in her diary that "Mr. Carpenter died last night".  He may have died in North Dakota.  No California death record is found.  His wife Nellie died 9 Feb 1981, and is buried in Rose Hills Memorial Park.  His burial place was then found in Rose Hills Memorial Park in the same niche as his wife Nellie.  It gives a death date of 2 Sep 1962, which differs from that of Amy Olson's diary if this was the same Carpenter.  Finally, a North Dakota Public Death Index, gives the death date as 2 Sep 1962, in Grant County, North Dakota, with residence in California, birthdate of 14 Jan 1908.
