Notes:  Florence Marian Smith was born 17 Jun 1903 in Logan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas.  Her parents were Horace True Smith and Elizabeth Jane Haley.  She had a brother Rupert, born in Nov 1898, and a sister Ruth born in Jul 1901  In the 1905 Kansas Census, the family was living in Pleasant Valley Twp., Saline County, Kansas.  The family spent eight years farming in Saline County, Kansas, before returning to Ottawa County.

In the 1910 U.S. census in Logan Twp., Ottawa, Florence had three more siblings, namely Esther, born in 1905, Lester, 1908, and Gertrude, 1910.  By the 1915 Kansas census, the family was living in Sheridan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas.  Her last sister Dorothy had been born in 1912.  Her father Horace was a grain farmer.

In the 1920 U.S. census, Logan Twp., Florence, 16, was the oldest child still at home.  She graduated from Delphos High School.  She married Samuel Charles Bergsten on 20 Mar 1926 in Belleville, Republic, Kansas.  She was 22, he was 21 years.

In the 1930 U.S. census, Florence and Samuel were living in Logan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas.  Samuel was a general farmer.  They were renting, and had a radio set.  Living with the family was Gertie Smith, a public school teacher and sister of Florence.

In the 1940 U.S. census, rural Logan Twp., Ottawa County, Florence and Samuel owned their residence, valued at $800.  Samuel was farming on his own account, and both had completed four years of high school.  Their son Lester D. Bergsten, 9, born in Kansas, had completed 4th grade.

In 1970, they retired to Delphos.  Florence was a member of the Delphos United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and the Friendly Neighbors Club.  Samuel died 1 Dec 1986.  Florence's last residence (S.S. records) was Peoria, Peoria, Illinois.

Florence died 29 Dec 1992 in the Ottawa County Hospital, Minneapolis, Kansas.  Funeral services were held Friday, 3 Jan 1992 at the Delphos United Methodist Church, the Revs. Darrell Walters and James Flick officiating.  She is buried with her husband in the Delphos Cemetery, Delphos, Kansas.
