In the 1915 Kansas census, the family was living in Sheridan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas. Her last sister Dorothy had been born in 1912. In the 1920 U.S. census, Sheridan Twp., the children at home were Florence, 16, Esther, 14, Lester, 11. Gertrude, 9, and Dorothy, 7, all in school.

In the 1925 U.S. census, Logan Twp., her sister Florence was teaching school, and Esther and her younger siblings were in school. In the 1930 U.S. census, Esther was a saleswoman in general merchandise, Lester a farm laborer, Gertrude, a public school teacher, and Dorothy, in school.

Esther married Virgil E. McKain sometime in the mid 1930's. In the 1940 U.S. census, Esther, 34, and Virgil, 32 were living in Sheridan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas. Virgil was a farmer, and they were renting. Esther had completed four years of high school. They had a son, Duane, age 3. born in Kansas.

Family notes report that they made their home in Delphos, Ottawa, Kansas. Virgil died 30 Oct 1960. Esther died 14 Jun 1965. They are both buried in the Delphos Cemetery, Delphos, Kansas.
