      Viola C. Duhig, the owner of Vi's Begonia Garden for a quarter century and a cookbook author, died Monday following a long illness.
      Mrs. Duhig, 73, had lived in Napa most of her life, graduating from Napa High School, then getting a nursing certificate from a nursing school in Sacramento.
      In 1942 she married Steward M. Duhig, who predeceased her in 1987.
      Her community involvement was extensive.  She owned and operated Vi's Begonia Garden in northeast Napa for 25 years.
      She also wrote and published three cookbooks.  Following her husband's death, she published a book that he wrote called "Huichica".
      She had once played cello in the Napa Valley Symphony orchestra with her father, a concert violinst.  Father and daughter also played in Vallejo and Santa Rosa symphonies.
      She was the past noble grand of the Ivy Rebecca Lodge and a leader of the Vichy 4-H Club for 18 years.
      For the last five years, she volunteered in the district attorney's office in the Victim's of Crime-Witness Program
      Mrs. Duhig was a member of the Napa Valley Garden Club, the Brown's Valley Garden Club, the Welcome Wagon Garden Club, the Napa Valley Historical Society, Napa Valley Landmarks, the Sierra Club and Napa Valley Land Trust.
      She was a charter member of the Vichy Mothers Club and the Napa Valley Art Association.
      Survivors include her sons, Dan Hancock of Culver City and Jim Duhig of Napa; a daughter Pat "Patty" Bunker of Plano, Texas; seven grandchildren and three neices.
      She was predeceased by her sister, Lorraine McDermott, and two grandchildren, Katherine and Richard Hancock.
      A memorial service will be held Friday at 4 p.m. at Nap's First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Erwin E. Bollinger officiating.
      Interment will be private at Tulocay Cemetery.
      Arrangements are by Treadway & Wigger Funeral chapel.  There will be no visiting hours at the chapel.
